Description:  Amtrak Coach 9406 at 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on September 27, 1986, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Number 9406 was built by Budd in 1954 as CB&Q number 558, part of the Burlington's contribution to the North Coast Limited. It became AMTK 9485, was converted to HEP in June 1983 and renumbered AMTK 9406, sold in April 1995 to Rail Adventures, Inc., named THE OBSERVATORY and assigned number 800290.

Description:  Well here is the surprise that I found in Durham. While PO80 was getting closer to me after taking the first shot, I notice somrthing strange bringing up the rear of the Carolinian. As it got closer I notice a dome peeking up over the rest of the Amfleet coach's. And what should appear, but a Northen Pacific Budd dome car!, but lettered for the CB&Q

#800290 THE OBSERVATORY
Title:  #800290 THE OBSERVATORY
Description:  Built in 1954 by Budd in Lot #9646-141 as CB&Q dome 46 seat chair #558, 1 of 10 such cars built in that Lot, which was ordered in March 1953 for the NORTH COAST LIMITED; cars were delivered between June and August 1954. NP owned 7 (#550-#556), CB&Q owned 2 (#557-#558), and SP&S owned 1 (#559). These 10 cars were intended to be renumbered as BN #4617-#4626, but these numbers were not applied. Sold in 1971 to Amtrak as #9477-#9486. In 1983, Amtrak converted 9 of these 10 cars to HEP #9400-#9408, #9485 was converted to HEP #9406 in June 1983. Retired and sold in 1995 to Tom McOwen's Cincinnati Railway Company. Leased between 1998 and 2000 to Grand Canyon RY as #2097 KOKOPELLI (1st), then qeconfigured to dome 3DB sleeper diner lounge and renamed THE OBSERVATORY.
